Overview

Abstract:

Purpose: Evaluate the care results for breast cancer patients after radical surgery. Patients and method: A prospective descriptive study was applied. 36 patients underwent total mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection at the Oncology Center - Thai Nguyen National Hospital from January 2023 to October 2023. Results: Tumours in the left breast have a higher rate than in the right breast, 58.3% vs. 41.7%. No cases of bilateral breast cancer were observed. Tumours cited in the upper and outer quadrants accounted for 50%. Most patients are diagnosed in stage II, accounting for 55.6%. There were no cases of infectious wounds or skin flap necrosis. 19.4% of patients were diagnosed with drainage output infection. 11.1% had fluid retention after operation. Most patients have a postoperative length of hospital stay of more than seven days, accounting for 75%. Nurses perform good handwashing and bandage change procedures when performing postoperative care of patients. 100% of patients received encouragement and consultants during the postoperative period. 83.3% of patients received advice on an appropriate diet. There is a significant change in the proportion of patients with surgical pain, mainly from severe and moderate pain, accounting for 88.9% within 24 hours after surgery. After 72 hours no cases of severe pain was observed. Conclusion: Infection of drainage output was the most prevalent surgical complication. Nursing breast cancers after modified radical mastectomy was performed by standard procedure and benefited the patient’s recovery.
