THE CHARACTERISTICS OF HYPOGLYCEMIA IN LOW

Abstract:
Hypoglycemia is the commonest metabolic disorder of neonates, especially low birth weight neonates. The study aimed to describe the proportion, clinical characteristics of hypoglycemia in low birth weight neonates at Thai Nguyen National Hospital. This is a cross-sectional descriptive study design, including 170 children from 1 day to 28 days diagnosed with low birth weight according to World Health Organization standards, venous blood glucose test was performed immediately upon admission at Thai Nguyen National Hospital, from August, 2023 to May, 2024. The results showed that: overall incidence of hypoglycemia was 64.1%. Of which, severe hypoglycemia accounts for 22%, moderate hypoglycemia accounts for 78%. Whereas, gestational age and low birth weight, were significantly related to hypoglycemia in low birth weight neonates. Most common clinical signs were tachypnea 82.6%, cyanosis 6.4%, apnea 30.3%, hypothermia 2.8%. Espiratory failure was significantly noticed with hypoglycemia (88.1%), then neonatal jaundice (9.2%), sepsis and neonatal polycythemia (4.6%).
