THE TREATMENT OUTCOMES FOR HERPES SIMPLEX KERATITIS

K L. V. T., Jul-2026, In: TNU Journal of Science and Technology, 232, 01, p. 128-135

Overview

Abstract:

Herpes simplex keratitis is a cause of corneal damage and associated loss
of visual acuity. The disease severely impacts visual health due to its
frequent recurrence. The study aims to evaluate the treatment outcomes of
Herpes simplex keratitis. A cross-sectional descriptive study of 35 HSK
patients was implemented at Thai Nguyen Eye Hospital in 2025. The
average age of patients was 56.49 ± 13.2 years, with a higher proportion of
male patients (62.9%) than female patients (37.1%). Visual acuity at
admission was below 1/10 in 41.7% of cases. The most common forms of
keratitis were epithelial keratitis and stromal keratitis without epithelial
ulceration, accounting for 38.9% and 36.1%, respectively. Endothelial
keratitis and stromal keratitis with ulceration were less common,
accounting for 16.7% and 8.3%, respectively. There was an improvement
in visual acuity before and after treatment. 69.4% had corneal scarring after
treatment and 5.6% had complications. Herpes simplex keratitis is more
common in people over 50 years old, with the most common clinical
presentation epithelial keratitis and stromal keratitis without ulceration.
Systemic antiviral treatment in all forms, combined with topical
corticosteroids for endothelial keratitis and stromal keratitis without
ulceration, improved visual acuity. HSK is prone to recurrence and
secondary complications indicating the need for routine diagnostic testing.
